Frequently Asked Questions
CAN A GREEN ROOF BE LAID ON TOP OF ANY ROOF?
Almost always. It will depend on the current waterproofing; if you have a watertight roof in good condition and it is built to current building regulations it should be ready for installation. However, we would suggest giving us a call to discuss your needs in more detail.
DOES A GREEN ROOF DAMAGE THE WATERPROOFING?
No, in fact if laid correctly it will protect and enhance the waterproofing life span.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SPECIES TO PLANT?
Leave that to us, we will carefully consider the location and your specifications agreed in the design stages to choose the optimal species
WHAT IS THE STEEPEST PITCH FOR A GREEN ROOF?
On steep roofs we advise retention battens every metre. We can help design this layout for you.
CAN I WALK ACROSS THE GREEN ROOF?
High foot traffic is not advised on your green roof. However, if you need to walk across often then paving can be put in place to facilitate this.
DOES A GREEN ROOF NEED AN IRRIGATION SYSTEM BUILT IN?
This really depends on location and height of your roof. We advise a good 6-month watering in period, morning and night (in high summer) then treat it like any other plant. If it is wet no need, if it is really hot it will need to be watered.
WHEN SHOULD YOU INSTALL A GREEN ROOF?
As long as there is no frost, or frost expected you can install green roofs at any time.
HOW DOES THE GREEN ROOF FIREBREAK WORK?
As a standard green roof need at least a 300mm cobbled border, this helps prevent fire from spreading and contains it onto the roof.
ARE GREEN ROOFS EASY TO INSTALL
With our green roof install guide, and with us on the end of the phone we can help guide you through the process. Or better still we can install for you.
WILL WEEDS GROW IN MY GREEN ROOF?
Maintenance will be needed on your roof, as weeds and stray species will start to grow. We send a simple maintenance guide on completion.
IS THERE A SIZE LIMIT TO WHAT ESSEX GREEN ROOFING WILL SUPPLY/INSTALL
No size too big or too small.
HOW DO THE MATERIALS GET TO ROOF LEVEL?
This can be in bulk bags via crane, telehandler, or for smaller roofs materials can be put in 25kg bags for ease of moving via ladders.
WHAT STOPS THE GREEN ROOF OR COBBLES COMING OFF THE EDGE OF THE ROOF?
To encapsulate the system, we use an aluminium edge retaining angle which is held in place by the weight of the cobbles and green roof system.
