Types of Greenroof

Sedum roofs

Sedum blanket systems are the most popular of all our green roofing systems. They are packed with 6-9 species of sedum that enable the blanket to change seasonally.

Being a species of plant found in the rough terrain of mountainous areas it is a very hardy plant and can be planted in a shallow growing medium. The advantage of this means sedum creates an ideal light weight system, and being shallow growing medium means many other plants can't survive in the same conditions and therefore it is low maintenance. Sedum blankets provide a complete look instantly as we have grown the blankets for a year to ensure 90% plant coverage upon install.

The standard sedum blanket system is made up of the following components
  • ESGR DRAIN08
  • ESGR FILTLER FLEECE
  • ESGR EXTSUB 50mm
  • ESGR PEB2040
  • ESGR SEDMAT

Similar to a sedum blanket system, light weight and low maintenance however plugged with approx. 20 plugs per m2, in time these will populate, and the green roof will be as dense as a sedum mat.

  • ESGR DRAIN08
  • ESGR FILTLER FLEECE
  • ESGR EXTSUB 80mm
  • ESGR PEB2040
  • ESGR SEDPLUG

This type of green roof has similar build up to a sedum blanket roof but with a little more substrate to support the new roots. The seeds are generally sown at a rate of 5kg per m2.

  • ESGR EXTSUB 80mm
  • ESGR PEB2040
  • ESGR SEDSEE

Wildflower Roofs

A wildflower blanket works the same as a sedum blanket where the plants have been pre grown and are already established but there is a much larger diversity of species including herbs, grasses and wildflower which are all native to the UK. The Wildflower blanket takes a little more maintenance than the sedum but its beauty is unsurpassed and the hard work will be worth it!

The wildflower system is made up of the following
  • DRAIN20
  • FILFLE
  • EXTSUB 100mm
  • PEB2040
  • WLDMAT

This system is the same as our brown roof with the added feature of seeding. The seed mix will be carefully selected to fit in with the clients and local environmental requirements. They will be 100% native to the UK.

The wildflower seeded system is made up of the following
  • DRAIN20
  • FILFLE
  • EXTSUB 120mm
  • PEB2040
  • LONSM

The Wildflower plugged system is a normal green roof build up but involves 20 plug plants per m2. These are typically 6-month-old saplings that will take 6-12 months to fully establish. The choice of plugs is vast.

The plugged system is made up of the following
  • DRAIN20 + FF
  • EXTSUB 100mm
  • PEB2040
  • EGRPLG

Brown roofs

This system is typically chosen when planning requires a variety of wildlife that needs supporting and allows for natural colonisation of plants. The roof will self-colonise from passing birds and seeds being carried in the wind. However, sometimes they can look barren and may need a little help with seeding with the location being on a rooftop.

The brown roof system is made up of the following components
  • DRAIN20
  • FILFLE
  • INTSUB 100mm (minimum)
  • PEB2040

This system is like a brown roof but includes undulation of the substrate and sand/log piles. This encourages habitats and biodiversity among the plant species. The biodiverse roof can be created to any design and enables us to really tailor the look and purpose of the roof to each individual site.

The biodiverse roof system is made up of the following
  • DRAIN08/20
  • FILFLE
  • BIOSUB 80-150mm
  • PEB2040

Other

Many roofing areas are now being utilised as amenity spaces. From granite and marble slabs, to standard flags we can provide paving systems to any requirement.

Although most green roofs are designed to have as little maintenance as possible, we must remember we are working with plants and during the initial bedding in period as the plant takes root into the substrate you may need to water/irrigate the system.

The need for irrigation depends on geographic system type and climate upon install. We can help design and advice on your requirement be aware you made need a good water pressure if the roof is high.

We install composite decking on rigid support frames held in place by adjustable pedestals.

These are installed on adjustable pedestals and cut to size where required.
